Objectives: Mupirocin (MUP) is a natural crotonic acid derivative drug, was first extracted from Pseudomonas fluorescens by Fuller et al.This antibiotic has a different mechanism of action and chemical structure and is a combination of pseudomonic acid A-D. Its mechanism of action, inhibits protein synthesis through binding to bacterial isoleucyl tRNA synthetase. This antibiotic is often used to treat skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus isolates. In addition, mupirocin is a drug of choice for nasal decolonization, control of outbreaks and prevention of recurring infections. Methods: In this review article, reliable English and Farsi databases including Google Scholar, Pubmed, Scopus, Magiran were searched and articles that studied the mechanism of action of mupirocin on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and they had studied the consumption of this antibiotic, were investigated.
