Background & aim: The use of common chemical agents in the treatment of pain causes digestive problems. Lallemantia iberica in traditional medicine has been used for the treatment of inflammation and neurological diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the analgesic effect(s) of ethanol extracts of Lallemantia iberica in male rats.
Methods: In the present experimental study, 42 adult male rats were divided into 7 groups: control, treated with the Lallemantia iberica at doses of (80, 100 and 300 mg/kg, i.p. morphine (1mg/kg, i.p.), aspirin (1mg/kg, i.p.), and naloxone (1 mg/kg, i.p.) with dose of 300 mg/kg. The analgesic effects of HRC were assessed with writhing, tail-flick and formalin tests. The data were compared by One-way ANOVA test.
Results: Lallemantia iberica leaf extract significantly inhibited the number of contractions induced by acetic acid. All doses of HRC showed antinociceptive activity in the tail flick model. In formalin test, the highest effect was observed at dose of 300 mg/kg (P<0.01). Administration of naloxone inhibited the antinociceptive effect of Lallemantia iberica Leaf Extract I.
Conclusion: The obtained data suggested that the analgesic effects of methanolic extract of Lallemantia iberica may be mediated via both peripheral and central mechanisms. The presence of flavonoids might be responsible for the antinociceptive activity of this plant.
