Studying the Effect of Dialectical Behavior Therapy on Cognitive Distortions in Patients with Human Immunodeficiency in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces

Background & aim: A defect or deficiency in the human immune system is one of the most common physiological-neurological diseases that is affected by difficult living conditions and existing cognitive pressures, and its prevalence is at a high level. Therefore, focusing on this disorder in physical-psychological dimensions is absolutely necessary. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine and investigate the effect of dialectical behavior therapy on cognitive distortions in patients with human immunodeficiency in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces.

Methods: The present quasi-experimental study included a two-group (experimental and control) and three-stage design (pre-test-post-test and control group and follow-up stage). The statistical population of the present study consisted of all patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who referred to counseling centers (behavioral diseases) and health and treatment network bases of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad provinces in 1403. In the present research, convenience sampling method was used to select the sample group. For this purpose, 40 patients who scored higher in the Cognitive Bias questionnaires and met the study entry criteria were selected and were completely randomly assigned to two experimental groups (20 people) and control (20 people). Then, the experimental group received dialectical behavior therapy sessions during eight training sessions, and the control group (for 45 days) did not receive any intervention. After completing the training sessions, both groups were given a post-test. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software and statistical tests of analysis of covariance (ANOVA and MANCOVA) and Bonferroni post-test.

Results: The findings indicated that dialectical behavior therapy had a significant effect on cognitive distortions in patients with human immunodeficiency in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad province (p<0.05). Based on the results obtained in the dialectical behavior therapy group, the difference between the mean scores of the pre-test stage and the post-test and follow-up stages was significant (p<0.01). The mean scores of cognitive distortions in the dialectical behavior therapy group were significantly lower than those in the control group. This meant that dialectical behavior therapy had a significant effect on improving cognitive distortions. In fact, cognitive distortions in the experimental group members decreased significantly after receiving dialectical therapy.

Conclusion: The present study investigated the effect of dialectical behavior therapy on cognitive distortions in patients with human immunodeficiency in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad provinces. The findings indicated that dialectical behavior therapy had a significant effect on cognitive distortions of death in patients with immunodeficiency. Finally, during the implementation of dialectical behavior therapy in the present study, members were taught to control their thoughts and attention to stop the useless thoughts and beliefs they had about themselves and their physical illness and factors that had caused their psychological distress.
